Come and see the largest volcanic lake in the world, Danau Toba (Toba Lake). For decades, Toba lake become a tourism's masterpiece of North Sumatera province, apart of Nias and Bukit Lawang.

Experts believe Toba lake and Samosir island, a small island in the center of the lake, seats on top of an active volcano. It is, in addition, the site of a supervolcanic eruption that occurred 69,000-77,000 years ago, a massive climate-changing event.

After this eruption, a caldera was formed that was filled by water afterwards and now known as Toba Lake. The pressure from the dormant magma, which has not yet erupted, caused Samosir Island to emerge.

As the centerpiece tourism destination, Toba lake has a magnificent scenery surrounded by talls mountains. In general, people stay several days in Samosir island to visit traditional Batak village, swimming and then go to hot spring in Pangururan. Toba lake is home to Batak people, mostly Christian in this modern days.

The sprawling 1701 sq km (bigger than Singapore)with island in the center, Toba lake can be reach from Medan city, arround 4 hours drive by car. And then get to the Parapat city. There is a ferry service also from Parapat directly to Samosir. Visitors mostly stay in Tuk Tuk area (named after the linguist Herman Neubronner van der Tuuk) in Samosir island.
